Beginner Witchcraft: Pocket Magic

When I started my journey in witchcraft, I was working as a tour guide at Guinness in Baltimore. I was always on the move and didn't have a desk to keep tools at. I was also still keeping my craft a secret, but wanted to test out my wings and bring my magic with me to work. These are a few super simple, super convenient ideas to test out when wanting to carry a bit of magic with you! :)

Amulets
This is my go-to! Before starting, meditate on what it is you'd like to work on- i.e. monetary prosperity, relaxation, centering yourself, speaking your truth, et cetera. It might help to create a mantra, like "I feel grounded, I feel safe, I am a pillar of strength." Repeat this to yourself as you look through your jewelry; listen to what piece calls out to you in response. Go ahead and perform a spell to build the energy that you're desiring; it could be as simple as casting your circle, lighting a white candle and imagining yourself feeling the way you desire. If we follow the grounded example, focus on feeling your feet on the floor. Imagine there are roots growing from the seed at your center, climbing down your legs and through the floor. Imagine that with each intake of breath, your shoulders are growing upwards like the trunk of a tree. Once you feel grounded and strong, using your finger or a wand, point at the piece of jewelry you're enchanting and imagine the energy being pulled into the jewelry. Every so often, it's good to renew your enchantments on your amulets or cleanse them.
There are certain pieces of jewelry that I wear on a daily basis. I don't recommend charming or enchanting these pieces. If anything, you might want to do a true-to-yourself spell with it. But otherwise I recommend cleansing these pieces every week or so. It'll help get rid of any negative or lingering energies that may have attached themselves to you throughout your week.

Spell Bottles or Spell Bags
Ooh yes I love me some spell bags. So a little thing when it comes to spell bottles: 100%, no doubt about it, they WILL fall apart in your pocket. It's super easy to find a pack of small bottles from a craft store that you can use and a lot of witches (myself included) seal the bottle with wax from a candle; I initially thought it would keep it sealed if I stored it in my pocket. But boy was I wrong. The heat from your pocket will melt the wax, and leave you with an icky, waxy mix in your pocket. In place of this, try using small reusable teabags (you can find a pack of 3 for a dollar at Mom's). That way you can make a lovely little mix of herbs and oils and crystals, tie it off, drop it in your pocket, and not have to worry about the mess!
Or, if you really can't let the idea of mini spell bottles go, at least drop the bottle into one of those little bags to save you the pain.

Crystals
Honestly, this is the easiest way to bring a bit of magic with you. I was really hesitant and a bit skeptical about spending a little bit of money on a few "beginner" crystals. But not all crystals are 30 bucks a pop (that's usually just those pretty and big chunks). The crystals that I started with were:
Rose Quartz- self love, love for others
Clear Quartz- amplifies energy, healing, a good substitute for other crystals
Black Onyx- absorbs negative energy
Labradorite- grounding, transformation
Amethyst- increases intuition
Citrine- amplifies creativity and concentration, and also cleanses other crystals
I'd looked up what crystals people recommended getting first, but by the time I got to my local metaphysical store, I picked whichever stones really called out to me in the moment. The one crystal I definitely recommend at the very least, is clear quartz.
Before leaving my apartment for the day, I like to grab whichever crystal I feel will help me throughout my day. If you have time in the morning, it's a good idea to do a tarot pull for your day ahead, and choose a crystal that corresponds with your reading. If you're feeling like you're moving way from your intention as you go through the day, just hold the crystal in the palm of your hand and focus on the way it feels. Imagine it leaking the energy you desire, and imagine that energy dissolving into your skin.
I recommend having citrine or selenite as well; I often leave the crystal I carried with me throughout the day next to my selenite tower to cleanse it of the day's energy.

Glamour Magic
For some people, putting their makeup on in the morning is practically a religious ritual. They may feel as if they are putting on armor for their day as they do it. This is glamour magic! Or maybe for you, you might spend a bit of extra time in the morning picking out exactly what it is you feel you should wear. Glamour magic! Paint your nails frequently to match your mood, or change your mood? How about changing your hair when you feel like you need a change? All glamour magic! Vella, the Beauty Witch, over at Vellamour.com defines glamour magic as:
Using your aura or appearance to change the energies around you to achieve the outcome you desire.
She also makes an important point that in order for your the magic to work, you need to make sure you're working with the energies! Just by deciding what your intention is that day, and building your look around it, that's a wonderful way to carry your magic with you! Whenever I go on trips, I make sure to pack pieces that I can mix and match to meet my energy accordingly. I also like to draw certain runes or sigils on my face with my foundation before blending it in.
I definitely recommend giving Vella's blog a read if you're into makeup (and magic) or interested in glamour magic! Read her blog here.
Sigils
While I tend to lean more towards runes, some witches love using sigils! I'll be doing a post soon on different ways you can create your own sigils; but as with the rest of witchcraft, the best thing to do is follow your gut with it! Like I mentioned above, you could work runes or sigils into your makeup routine, paint it on your nails before blending them in, draw them on the bottoms of your shoes, or just draw a little sigil on your arm before you start your day. There are so many ways to work this in! Here's a quick list of places you can place sigils:
On a piece of paper in your phone case
On the tag inside of your shirt
On the back of your hairbrush or hair tools
On a piece of paper in your wallet
On the insides of books or notebooks
On the bottom of a coffee mug or tumbler
